With a Korean learning experience spanning over eight years, I consider myself well qualified to provide suggestions to my fellow Korean learners. So in this post, I’ll share what worked best, what to avoid, and the exact courses I recommend to beginners and intermediate learners.

- Time zone friendly (most are self-paced)
- Budget-friendly (some are even free)
- No need for Korean textbooks in the beginning
- Easily accessible even with mobile internet
- Provide enough knowledge or skills to add-on to your resume
Top Free Korean Courses (For Beginners)
While there are plenty of free resources available on the internet for Korean learners, one might get overwhelmed by just looking at the search results, each claiming to help you master it in no time.
There comes to your rescue advice from experts like me who’ve tried and tested many of those study materials.
Here are my top three recommendations for those aiming to start learning Korean for free!
1. Talk To Me In Korean (TTMIK) – Free Level 1 to 3
It offers free access to Level 1-3 of its Core Grammar course, providing a comprehensive introduction to basic Korean grammar and phrases.
These free lessons cover essential greetings, simple sentence structures, and common questions, allowing learners to build a foundation in the language which is perfect for beginners.
Many lessons include audio files for pronunciation practice, sample dialogues to illustrate how the learned phrases are used in conversation.
My Tip: You can combine these with their YouTube channel and the free quizzes. Buy their physical or digital workbooks — super helpful!
You can learn how to introduce yourself in Korean (with a good pronunciation) within 3 days of using TTMIK. Their voice actors are native speakers, which really helps you build a strong foundation in both speaking and listening.

2. Coursera – First Step Korean by Yonsei University
It consists of only 5 lessons and covers all four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The main topics include greetings, introducing yourself, talking about your family and a daily life.
Each lesson covers dialogues, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, quizzes and role-plays for a fun learning experience.
It’s prepared by Yonsei University’s faculty (one of the top three universities of Korea) and so going for a certificate might actually help in any applications for a role at an official Korean institution.
It’s totally free with option to get a certificate for INR 3,000.
My Tip: Use it along with free TTMIK’s grammar notes to reinforce concepts.

3. YouTube: Learn Korean with GO! Billy Korean
Billy is an American youtuber who’s uploaded tons of videos on Korean learning on youtube and you can access it all for Free.
His lively teaching style is perfect for those looking for casual learning and he often takes trips to Korea so you can look forward to cultural tips too.
The only downside is that it’s not a structured course, so it might not suit serious learners.
If you like his teaching style you might like it more with textbooks published by himself.
My tip: compliment Yonsei’s course with it and you’ll have both fun and structured learning, plus a certificate if you pay a lil bit.

Best Paid Courses to Learn Korean (For Serious Learners)
If you aiming for a good level of proficiency in Korean and willing to dedicate some time and money to gain Korean expertise, here are my suggestions for paid courses.
1. TTMIK Full Course Access + Workbooks
The premium courses cover advanced grammar and natural expressions, all by native Korean speakers.
With their systematic curriculum, professional teachers, over 1500 bite-sized online lessons and beautiful books shipped worldwide, you’re sure to get fluent in Korean within months.
My bonus Tip: Their “Storytelling” and “Daily Korean Conversations” series are gold for intermediate learners (recommendation based on personnel experience)
2. Udemy – Korean for Beginners / TOPIK Prep
Udemy offers a diverse range of Korean courses suitable for various levels and learning styles, often featuring instructors with extensive experience in teaching Korean or language learning in general.
Typical Cost is ₹499–₹1,299 so you can access the ones in your budget (watch for discounts!) and you’ll have lifetime access!
I’ll suggest these two, you can go for the one in your budget:

My Tip: Use this for a structured learning with flexible, combining with small Youtube videos for practice.
3. Coursera Specializations (Yonsei, SNU, etc.)
Offer structured learning, graded assignments, and often a certificate of completion, which can boost your resume and career prospects.
They also provide access to a more comprehensive curriculum, mirroring real Korean university courses.
My Tip: Go for SNU, Yonsei courses if you are planning to study in Korea or sit for TOPIK
Bonus: Courses to Avoid (My Honest Take)
As said earlier, there are plenty of courses out there claiming to teach you Korean but I’ve seen many of them are either overpriced or are not beginner-friendly i.e. the methodology or content of the course is not proper. While I can’t possibly list all of them here and won’t be good on my part to call out anybody who’s put efforts (however small) into their content, I’d suggest you avoid any that:
- Don’t teach Hangeul from the beginning; speaking is good but isnot going to get you anywhere honestly
- Have no speaking/listening practice; without practise you cant build a good foundation, itsa a must
- Rely only on vocabulary flashcards; big red flag learn for your life (and money)
