1. Simple Data & Coding Skills
Studying for a Master’s or PhD, even in non-technical fields, will definitely involve working with data. You’ll need to run analyses for your research, course projects, or your main thesis. You don’t need to be a coding expert, but you must know how to use basic statistical software.
- Why it matters: Your research supervisor (Professor/PI) will expect you to handle your own data collection and analysis. Knowing these tools saves you massive amounts of time.
- What to learn: Start with user-friendly programs like SPSS or Stata. There are tons of free lessons on YouTube that can teach you the basics of data input, cleaning, and running simple tests.

- To write your papers, you must use information from existing research. You have to take the information, understand it completely, and write it in your own, unique words, and that’s called paraphrasing.
- Paraphrasing is a skill! You cannot just change a few words; you need to change the sentence structure and vocabulary.

- Read complex scientific articles.
- Then, close the article and try to explain the main idea to a friend or write it down without looking at the original text.
- This helps you grasp the concept rather than just copying the words.
- Good paraphrasing shows your understanding and keeps your work original.
3. Essential Social & Communication Skills
This might seem less important than coding, but it’s often the most challenging part for international students. If you lack social communication skills, your academic life will be much harder, leading to feelings of isolation and loneliness.
