While achieving Permanent Residency (F-5 Visa) in Korea is a huge step filled with lots of pitfalls, it is absolutely possible with proper planning and right strategy!
The key is understanding the rules and choosing the correct pathway from the 27+ different types of F-5 visas available. As soon as you get the right type of visa, you need to get started on gathering the right documents and meeting specific requirements related to your time in Korea, which includes your money situation, your knowledge of Korean society and other things. The Four Pillars of F-5 Eligibility
No matter which F-5 category you apply for, there are four core standards the Korean Immigration Office (HiKorea) will check.
1. Length of Stay
The most common route, F-5-1 (General Permanent Resident), needs you to have lived in Korea for at least five consecutive years on a specific long-term visa (like D-7, D-8, E-7, or F-2).

You must show you can support yourself and your family without relying on public welfare.
- The GNI Standard:
- For the general F-5-1 visa, your annual income in the year before you apply must be at least double Korea’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita.
- The GNI number changes every year. As a reference, the GNI announced in early 2025 (based on 2024 data) was approximately 49,955,000 KRW.
- This means for F-5-1, you would need to show income close to 100 million KRW.
- Wider Scope: For some other F-5 types (like Ph.D. holders or spouses of Koreans), the requirement might only be one time GNI. Your income proof must be verifiable, tax-paid income.
3. Clean Record
You must have a clean criminal record both in Korea and in your home country. Even minor immigration violations (like missing an address report) can be seen as a negative factor and may lead to serious delays or rejection.
- Document Tip: The criminal background check from your home country usually needs to be apostilled or verified by a Korean consulate/embassy, and must be officially translated.
4. Language & Culture
The government wants to see that you’ve integrated into Korean society. The easiest way to prove this is by completing the Korea Immigration and Integration Program (KIIP).
- The Gold Standard: You need to complete KIIP Level 5 or pass the final comprehensive test with at least 60 points. KIIP Level 5 is called “Understanding Korean Society” and teaches you about Korean history, laws, and culture.
- The Benefit: Completing KIIP Level 5 generally exempts you from the language interview portion of the F-5 application, making the process much smoother.

- Background: Apostilled/verified criminal background check.
- Integration: KIIP Completion Certificate (Level 5) or Comprehensive Test score.
